Review of Bluapple®

Bluapple®

What are they?

Plastic blue apple-shapped items that contain a packet inside that claims to absorb ethylene gas.

What do you get?

Two blue apples. They snap open to reveal a packet that claims to absorb ethylene gas. There are instructions on the packaging, as well as inside, along with information about ethylene gas, what it is, and how different produce is affected by it. There is also a 100% money-back guarantee.

What is the price?

Cost is $9.99 for a Bluapple® two-pack that comes ready to absorb ethylene gas for three months. A One-Year Refill kit is available for $9.99 which includes 8 replacement packets.

What are the beneficial claims?

Taken from their website:

"Ethylene gas is given off naturally by fruits and vegetables as a signaling mechanism in order to coordinate uniform ripening. However, once concentrated in your refrigerator or other storage areas, the presence of ethylene gas continues to speed up ripening and hasten spoilage."

The Bluapple® is designed to provide effective ethylene gas absorption for three months in a typical home refrigerator produce bin or storage container. The active ingredient does not "wear out", but continues to absorb ethylene until it has reached its capacity. A One-Year Refill Kit rounds out the Bluapple® ethylene gas management product line, allowing consumers to reuse Bluapples® and not add them to landfills.

They are reusable. At replacement time, the ingredients inside each packet can be added to plants or gardens as a fertilizing agent.

How do they work?

Zeolite is a volcanic rock. Sodium Permanganate is a natural chemical that is used as an oxidizing agent; it permeates the zeolite rock and absorbs ethylene gas. By absorbing the gas through a scientific method, the spoilage rate of produce is dramatically reduced.

Independent reviews or scientific study

A Google search of "the science behind Bluapple" brings up the Bluapple® website as the first search result. The first link, "Tell me about the ethylene gas problem" provides a link to an independent lab study by Post Harvest Fresh. Not only is there a link to the independent study, but many other scientific links, providing an understanding of ethylene gas and exactly how Bluapple® works.

Our take

Our product works. It is scientifically proven to work. Ethylene gas is scientifically proven to be one of the major causes of produce decay, and The Bluapple® takes care of ethylene gas through a sound scientific method. It is only $20 for more than a year?s worth of usage, and then only $9.99 each year thereafter. It is very affordable. Bluapple® easily pays for itself over a short amount of time.
